Observation Narrative
This red oak dominated forest is more or less typical of second growth stands on north facing spur slopes of the Middle Mountain east flank. Scattered hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) is characteristic of these stands, as are sparse growths of mountain laurel. These red oak communities usually are transitional between richer, more mixed oak-ericad communities on the crests and south slopes. This area was logged and burned around 1920. Gypsy moth is present in small numbers here and can be expected to increase dramatically in coming years. Measured trees in plot (dbh in cm.): Quercus rubra (51,50,49), Tsuga canadensis (40), Magnolia acuminata (36), Acer rubrum (45).
